In which order should I move to new hardware and disjoin from a domain?
Hi all,
I need to move my VBR server off our domain into a workgroup, and migrate VBR from an old physical server to new hardware. There are a few other things coming up soon too, such as upgrading VBR from 12.1 to 12.2 so I can upgrade ESX from 7.0.3 to 8.0, but I'm ok with these.
Is it better/easier to:
A. setup a new physical server in a workgroup, restore the config from the current server onto it and fix what breaks, or
B. take the current server out of the domain first, then build a new server and restore the config onto it?
I'm leaning towards A, but don't know whether restoring a domain-joined config onto a workgroup server will be problematic. At least this way the backout would be easy though, right?

I have done exactly A (except that it was a vm while the old server was physical) and there were no problems at all. Check that you don't have any services running with domain accounts, and that you have a local account to login to VBR with.

Agree with Daniel, A should work.
I advise review KB4469 and keep it handy during the move, as it has details on the common issues one might face after moving VBR from Domain to Workgroup, as well as the solutions. But A makes sense to me.

Both should work. I'd take approach B though, only because you'd be left with a working Veeam installation before making a migration to a new server at which point the new server should work as expected when the configuration is restored to it, rather than being left with a server that needs things fixed.
The benefit of A though is that you can roll back to A very easily. Power off the new, power back on the old.
Kind of a 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of another type scenario.

Thanks all. I'll go with option A then for the easy backout.
