What components and services make up the Veeam Backup & Replication Console?

Post by kevin.boddy »

Hi,

I am trying to understand the hardware system requirements for the Veeam Backup & Replication Console.
The memory requirement is 8GB.

What components and services do I count toward that 8GB of memory for when the console is installed both locally on the VBR server or installed remotely?

When I have the console installed on a remote server I can see the veeam.backup.shell.exe running which is the console. Is that the only component that counts toward the 8GB memory requirement?
What about when it's installed locally on the VBR server? Is the veeam.backup.shell.exe the only thing I need to consider for this 8GB memory requirement?

Also what happens when you connect to multiple VBR servers, does the 8GB memory requirement only cover one running console?
If I connect to three VBR servers does that mean I need 3x 8GB or is it still only a maximum of 8GB required?

Thanks
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

You can find the list of all components installed alongside the Veeam Backup & Replication console on this page. I would say that your assumption about the veeam.backup.shell.exe process is correct: this process caches some objects required for UI functioning and responsiveness. However, I don't think you should spend time on this theoretical analysis of our low-level architecture. The 8 GB RAM requirement will still be relevant.

It doesn't matter how many backup servers the console works with, you always need 8 GB RAM.

Thanks!

Hi,

The documentation says console requires 8GB of memory and the console is this process veeam.backup.shell.exe as confirmed by looking at what process runs when opening the console.
The system requirements for the backup server is 8GB of memory and the console memory requirement is also 8GB of memory.
Therefore if both are installed on the same server I need at least 16GB for these two components.

I have the Veeam.Backup.UIServer.exe consuming more memory than any other service on the backup server.
Which memory budget does this come out of, the backup server 8GB memory or the console 8GB memory?

Based on the fact that this service is not installed on a server with only the console installed I would think the obvious answer would be it's part of the backup server memory.

How do I find this out?

Thanks
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Since the server cannot be installed without console, we take the backup server requirements: it is 8 GB of RAM + 500 MB for each concurrent job.

Thanks!
