SQL Failover Cluster - How is CSV not supported?

Post by bunnatee »

Hello,
I have a question regarding the conditions and limitations of the Veeam Agent,
which states: 'Backup of CSV (Cluster Shared Volumes) is not supported. Cluster disks used as CSV are automatically excluded from backup.'
Could you clarify in what aspects this is unsupported?

I tested this in my environment by creating a job to back up a SQL Failover Cluster, as shown in the image.
As you can see, the backup completed successfully.

However, upon checking the number of disks, I found that the CSV was included in the backup, as shown in the image.

Could you please elaborate on the exact ways in which it’s unsupported?

Hello,

I will discuss this behavior with my colleagues from QA department and will update the topic as soon as I have more details.

Thanks!

Cluster Shared Volumes are skipped from processing, so whenever you are preforming the restore such volumes wont be present in the backup. You still can backup the entire cluster with such volumes being skipped. Thank you!

Hello,

Just elaborating a bit more on Dima P.'s comment above after my brief discussion with colleagues from the QA department:
The screenshot from the first post is not enough to conclude that CSV disks have been processed and are present in the backup. Most likely, these disks have different numbers on different nodes. For example, on one node, a CSV disk may have the number 3, but on another node, disk 3 is not related to CSV, and the export disk wizard will show that disk 3 is included.

The best way to ensure that these disks were correctly excluded is to find the following message in the job action log: 'Skipping recovery media collection: cluster contains CSV disks' (select a corresponding workload on the left side in the UI job session).

Thanks!
