KB5044284 upgraded 2019 and 2022 servers to 2025 without warning. Breaks guest indexing

Check your servers. I came in and noticed half of my backups failed. Look at logs, guest indexing. Run tests it thinks they are Linux machines. Go to VMware open console realize my day is shot. Servers upgraded to 2025

Cannot roll back changes, having to restore from backups and block the update

I just ran updates on my Server 2022 lab VM and it didn't automagically upgrade on me.

Must be a certain set of circumstances that force it to do so, or Microsoft has fixed the problem already.

Certain Pachtmanagement softwares had a error... (Or better said , I just read from one "Heimdal", what do you have ?)

The biggest issue is not guest imdexing... it starts with application aware not supported...
Right now you can only do one thing, ignore aap procession errors until Veeam patches and supports srv2025! Until then you've to check your SQL or exchange because logs aren't processed and truncated!

You could restore to the pre automatic in place upgrade..

Yeah I started to see this after upgrading (purposely) some of my Windows machines to the new 2025. I turned off App Aware for now and will see how it goes once 12.3 drops next month that fully supports it. If there is a fix though would be interested.

Hello,

Could you please share the exact error messages? I'd like to make sure that we're not talking about a different problem, and that the issue will be fixed in 12.3 which will support Windows Server 2025.

Thanks!

This is the message I saw after the upgrade via Windows Update -

"2024-11-07 9:24:04 AM :: Processing vm-name Error: Unable to perform application-aware processing: Unknown Operating System guest OS is not supported"

Hello,

Yes, I confirm that the message above is the expected behavior in this case with Windows Server 2025. It will work in 12.3.

Thanks!

Thanks Petr. I figured as much and turning off app aware gets rid of it but will turn it back on once 12.3 comes out.

looks like 12.3 release has been post-poned ?! and support for server 2025 is taking longer then expected? not an ideal scenario to be honest...

Postponed until when? I have not heard that is the case. December was the time frame.

Thanks for confirming Gostev. Considering I got a partner email about 12.3 yesterday seemed odd. 😂

Is there a registrykey or option to turn on unsupported OS for indexing? I mean what's the harm, it doesnt write anything to the unsupported OS.

I don't believe there is a registry key, and you will need to wait for support to be official in 12.3.

Sure, however if you think more about what indexing does, there's actually much bigger threat because it brings collected guest file system data back to the backup server, so in theory it can generate and bring back TBs of invalid data because of some recursion bug, which would crash your backup server and ruin all your other, healthy backup jobs.
