Restore Issue - Restore In-Place Archive backup to Regular mailbox

Post by neilp »

HI Everyone
We are having a problem with trying to restore an "In Place Archive Mailbox" backup to a regular mailbox in Office 365.
We get an error:

Failed to open mailbox "Regular Mailbox"
Failed to access mailbox
Mailbox does not exist.

Our Exchange Admin says they have configured "Impersonation Role", and he is able to restore regular mailbox backups to other mailboxes without issues. And he is able to restore the "Archive Mailbox" to PST.

The restore from In place Archive to regular mailbox seems to be failing.

Has anyone else had issues with restoring Archive mailbox backups to regular mailboxes?

Note: Case #07514833

Thanks

Hi Neil

You can only restore mailbox data to the same type. As noted in the documentation:
Mailbox Restore - Considerations and Limitations
Mailboxes can be restored only to mailboxes of the same type. For example, a user mailbox to a user mailbox, an archive mailbox to an archive mailbox.
I recommend trying the PST export option.
Export the mailbox as a PST file, then use Microsoft's PST Import service to import the data into the mailbox. You can find more information on the import process here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/purvi ... office-365
