Thanks for posting the document, Dima. I'm downloading it now to read over all the apps and test upgrading the lab. I'm looking forward to this release, especially the new AI features in VONE.

Installing now on test.

Step 1 of 7 - Installing PostgreSQL is taking forever. - It could be MS Defender slowing it down.

I had that happen to me: it was showing installing Postgres, but when I pointed it to my external PG server, it failed. I ran the setup a second time, and then it worked as expected minus the PG install step. It's very odd.

Why is PostgreSQL being installed if it's a SQL Server backend? Is Veeam forcing everyone to PostgreSQL?

1/ It will be a type of aux/caching repository for new workloads like Entra ID backups.
2/ Eventually yes. For example, Microsoft SQL Server will not be an option for V13 VBR on Linux.

A quick check on the server says it installed PostgreSQL 15.10-01.

This mean vulnerability scans will highlight PostgreSQL CVEs and we'll have to keep it updated ourselves, thanks.

@lando_uk do you mean there is a newer PostgreSQL 15 build than this?

No, I just mean there will be a new one soon and it'll need updating - It's just something else that takes time and resources. MSSQL was fine, as updates just come down via WSUS without any paperwork or RFC's. Will Veeam automatically support updated versions when they are released?

I feel if you're not using a certain feature why blanket install the components? It's the same for the plugins and explorers, surely it's just bloat for most users.

It was significantly easier and aligns to our priority to migrate all users to hosting their configuration database on PostgreSQL sooner rather than later.
However, for now you can simply uninstall PostgreSQL and don't worry about its patching.

No, same as Veeam not supporting the latest build that is tested on server 2022 (v15 is tested up to 2019), and same as veeam not supporting application aware processing of its own PgSQL backend on Windows

I get where you're coming from but from a patching perspective this kind of migration shouldn't happen slowly. If you're going to cut over to it, cut over. I shouldn't have to patch 2 database instances for one software.

We're planning to patch PostgreSQL as a part of product updates in V13.

I'm adding to the chorus on PostgresSQL.

I did not consent to a new third-party software being installed on my server. Thankfully I'm attentive and noticed that PSQL was installed unexpectedly like others are reporting, but installing a dependency is absolutely not something that Veeam should be doing if it's unused. It's just proper hygiene and etiquette.

Thanks for the clarification.

I sought out this post specifically for clarification about the replacement of SQL server with PostgreSQL having noticed its installation. I too don't want to have unnecessary software that I need to maintain (basic good practice). I don't have a problem if Veeam migrate to PostgreSQL but I'm unclear why, at this stage, it is installed if it isn't being used and can just be removed.

Does any fuctionality get lost at the moment?
If we at some point intend to use the new Entra integration is this the same Postgres instance that gets used or is it a different one?
Do we at all have to install any add-on for Entra ID Backup after upgrade to 12.3?

On my side at postgresql installation the installer fail... (MS SQL in backend)
and if I try to manually install pgsql with the installer shipped in the .iso file... it fails too (problem running post-install step "problem running post-install step database cluster initialization")

Hi NightBird,
Support will tell for sure by looking at the installation logs, but to me it looks like Windows Script Host is disabled on the machine, on which PostgreSQL installer still relies on in the last steps after installation to initiate the instance.

Had the same issue.
I disabled Windows Defender antivirus temporarily and run the setup/upgrade a second time and it installed without any issue

1/ At the moment only EntraID backup will be lost if you uninstall PostgreSQL. Assuming you're not using PostgreSQL for configuration database, which I recommend going forward.
2/ Same.
3/ No, it's integrated into the product.

I can't find a document with more detailed fixes. :(
Is the Proxmox data corruption fix included, which was previously only released as a hotfix?
As discussed here kvm-rhv-olvm-proxmox-f62/fyi-potential- ... 95796.html
-> Hotfix: https://www.veeam.com/kb4686

Yes, hotfixes are always included in the immediate product release by default.

@All please put workload-specific questions to workload-specific subforums going forward and keep this thread for generic questions related to V12.3 as a whole (like setup etc.) otherwise the conversation will quickly become unmanageable.

Fully agree, I don't want to manage/patch another DB instance on my nearly 100 VBR installations

for clarification:
if postgress was installed and used allready in an older version it didn't get installed or updated... ?
but if the config database is still on MS-SQL, PSQL gets installed because of EntraID Backup??

If you installed Veeam Backup & Replication using a local PostgreSQL instance, the Microsoft Entra ID backup repository uses the same PostgreSQL instance as the Veeam Backup & Replication configuration database. If you installed Veeam Backup & Replication using Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Entra ID backup repository uses a dedicated PostgreSQL instance that V12.3 setup will install on the backup server. Thanks!

If you uninstall the Postgres that comes with v12.3 - I presume it'll just get re-installed on every future update going forward?

I have this crazy idea, why not install it when you choose to configure an Entra ID backup job? As who will actually use this feature, maybe 2% of customers?
