[VHRISO] fails to install on HPE DL380G9 with Fibre Channel and USB stick
MOD: split from post532222.html#p532222
Case #07543755
I attempted to setup the following system with the latest ISO but it fails about half way through. I am having a hard time figuring out why from the logs displayed but I assume it is because of the older hardware.
ProLiant DL380 Gen9
192Gb Ram
2x 2.6Ghz CPU (12 Core Each)
HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331i Adapter
2x HP Store Fabric 8Gb Single Port PCI-e FC HBA (Connectivity Dell PowerStore VMWare SAN)
Smart Array P440ar Controller
2x 200Gb SSD (Primary OS)
12x 1Tb 10k drives (Repository)

Re: [VHRISO] fails to install on HPE DL380G9 with Fibre Channel and USB stick
Hello,
I read USB stick in the case... so my guess is, that Rufus was used with wrong settings.
The second thing is fibre channel. Even with only a single port, I assume there are two paths for the LUN / volume. Multipathing devices are unsupported for now and can also cause issues. If the USB stick guess was wrong, then I suggest to also disconnect FC.
Best regards
Hannes

Thanks for the info. I think you are correct on the USB thing. I redid that and I was able to install it. I also unplugged my FC cards. I do have 2 of them.
I plugged 1 back in and mapped it over in the switch so it should have connectivity over to prod storage that I will be backing up.
I still can't ping the VHR but I have my network folks looking into that. I'll update once I get it fully operational.

OK I am in. I have the VHR setup on the hardware above so you all can market that down as compatible.
I have a test backup of a 1Tb VM running now.
I am completely new to this so forgive my lack of knowledge.
We use an HPE Apollo today. It has Windows on it and it has fiber connectivity back to the SAN where our VMware datastores reside.
I have it setup as both the proxy and the repository so that when I run backups I am able to use the Direct SAN access mode and not send backup data across the network.
That said, I don't see that ability with the VHR. I attempted to add the VHR test box as a proxy and it gave me a warning about this being an attack surface so I backed off.
Is anyone using their VHR as both the proxy and repository so they can use direct SAN access?
I see in HannesK's post that there is an issue with multipathing which I think means I can have 1 FC card with 1 path but I can't have both like I do with my Apollo.
Even 1 would be enough for now because when I go into production with this thing it will have a 32gb fc card connected.

This is not specific to VHR ISO. Hardened repositories never supported any transport modes other than NBD for local proxy because other modes require root privileges to operate.

and just to add: ping is enabled in the upcoming version 2 only.
