"Failed to update license" with Community Edition after Update to v8

Post by msobm »

I have updated my Veeam 365 to v8.
Since then i get an E-Mail every night with this error:

License update interrupted:
Failed to check for license update

When I run the PowerShell Command "Update-VBOLicense" i get the following error:
Update-VBOLicense: Failed to check for license update: Incorrect data for the query.

No Problems with Paid Licenses, just Community and NFR. Anyone else has this Issue?

Yup, I am getting the email as well. I suspect it is a bug with the licensing service that was not discovered before launch given NFR is not their top priority and it'll be fixed soon.

Update:

I was wrong. We have never supported this. Only paid licenses get automatic upgrades, for NFR and Community (although you should not have a license for this) you should request a new license as they cannot be auto-upgraded.

We are aware that the product tries to do this auto-update, and we will fix this in one of the upcoming updates in the product.

@Mike
For NFR i should be able to request a License, currently i can only download a v7 license, but i can request that with a case at veeam.

But there is no Community License i can download as far as i know, isn't it?
I install the Product without a License and it operates with a Community License, i never requested a License for that.

Michael

Correct,

For the NFR, use the method you have used before to get a new one
For Community license, we are aware of the bug and we will try to fix that as soon as we can

Thanks Mike.
As the Backup currently is working that is no time critical issue, but maybe this is just a grace Period after which the Backups do not work anymore.

FYI:
The Error Message for Community Editions seems a bit different (Message in the first Post is from NFR):

License update interrupted:
Paid license is not installed.

It should continue to work for community edition, but for NFR I would request a new one for v8 because that one will stop working anyway after a specific point in time

As I said before, with community edition there is no actual license. We are aware of the bug and will fix it in one of our updates.

Despite several updates, I still encounter this error with the Community Edition. Is there an estimated time for a fix or some kind of workaround?
Thanks!

Hi Marc,

There's no ETA atm. The only workaround is to install a paid license.

Thanks!

We have nearly 100 customers of VBO and VBR

I suppose 10 - 15% on free editions

I've left most of VBO on v7 due to major rework on v8 , waiting for something like v8.1

Marco, in your case the solution would be to get in compliance with the Veeam Licensing Policy.

Based on this you're clearly providing your customers a service based on CE, which directly violates our EULA.
So don't get upset with Polina highlighting an obvious issue - it's much better to hear this from PM than from Legal :)

Marco,

No blaming at all, I'm just worried that should you as a partner need help from our support team, you won't be eligible to get it because of the EULA/licensing issue. And also being compliant will help you to get rid of the issue with those warnings )

Hello together,

with new version 8.1.0.305 it's still not possible to unselect "update license automatically"

Hi All,
it's still not possible to unselect "update license automatically"
For the Community Edition, this option is enabled by default and it will remain enabled. This is by design of Community Edition, rather than a bug in the product.

We'll fix the minor issue mentioned above in one of the next product updates.

Thanks!

I get that it's not a priority, because only the community edition is affected.
There is a thin line between, not a priority and leaving it in on purpose to annoy people who use the free version.
