[VHRISO] fails to install with duplicate UUID error with software RAID controller
MOD: split from post532222.html#p532222
Hello everyone,
i would like to test this on a physical server, but unfortunately it won't boot after installing. Everything seems fine, but after the successful installation and a reboot the UEFI states that there are no bootable devices available. I see rocky linux as a boot option but it just jumps directly back to UEFI. When i start the installation again it shows a problem with duplicate UUID for devices sdc1 & sdb1. I guess the OS doesn't support multipathing because the smaller disk (where the OS should reside on) is internally connected via two paths. There are no external Shelfs or anything else attached to the server and i can see that 2 logical drives are available (as it should be). One via HPE Smart Array P408i-a SR Gen10 as Backup Repo and one via HPE Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 for the OS.
Does someone came across this problem or should i contact support?
Thanks in advance!
Regards
Maurice

Re: [VHRISO] fails to install with duplicate UUID error
Hello Maurice,
correct, multipathing is not supported
I remember that "duplicate UUID" issue from early tests where I had a software RAID controller (which seems to be also true for the HPE Smart Array S100i SR). And software RAID controllers are also unsupported.
Best regards
Hannes

Hello Hannes,
thank you for clarifing. I guess i need to have look at upcoming Server Sizings to be compatible in future projects.

Re: [VHRISO] fails to install with duplicate UUID error
I found something in the Quick Specs of the Server:
"The S100i supports windows only. For Linux users, HPE offers a solution that uses in-distro open-source software to create a two-disk RAID 1 boot volume. For more information visit: https://downloads.linux.hpe.com/SDR/project/lsrrb/"
Is it possible to support something like this?

Re: [VHRISO] fails to install with duplicate UUID error
Hello,
thanks for the documents and the details. It sounds like adding a big amount of complexity that is hard to support in the Veeam support organization. While "technically possible", the answer might be "yes", that does not change plans for what we support: hardware RAID controllers are required.
If it's about saving money: as far as I know, HPE controllers can create LUNs from a RAID set. If you have let's say 12x14TB in your hardware RAID, then you can create a LUN for OS (let's say 300GB) and keep the rest for data.
Best regards
Hannes
