Another retention mystery

Post by jcofin13 »

Ill try to explain this as simple and best i can.

Environment:
v12.2
Linunx Hardeneed Repo
Sobr-->AWS
Immutability 30 days.

Backup Job
--> vms added to the job individually (not by folder or datastore etc)

A vm is removed from vmware and purged.
After many months im looking in Veeam at the Backup-->Disks--><backup job name> and i can still see this vm in the backup. I only show 2 of the last backup restore points from months back. They dont show anything in the retention column or the immutable column...which makes sense due to their age.

Why are they still showing up on disk? Shouldnt veeam have aged these out and cleaned up all the older restore points from this vm? I cant understand why it would still be there unless veeam has a mechanism to keep a couple copies around for some strange reason.

I have several vms like this. The vms are gone but some number of random restore points remain when browsing "disk" properties. It shows a vbk and 1 or move vibs.

Hello,
I would recommend opening a support ticket to investigate further. Have you reviewed the next option? It might be the reason of what is happening https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

Share with us the support case number so we can take a look.

Thank you!

I will see if i can find time to get a case open. I can see this in more than one instance of veeam. It must be something simple i am just not understanding. It just seems odd for a small number of backup files to remain after all this time. I would expect them to all be gone.

The only concern really is that they are using space that we could reclaim if they were removed but id like to understand why they are still there in the first place.

We dont have deleted item retention setup on the job and never have. I guess thats something we can look at but i cant explain why ALL the old backups are not there then. ITs only showing a couple backup files (restore points) for each.
