Windows Server 2025 PostgreSQL support

Post by jp7189 »

I am working on a deployment of Veeam 12.3 on Windows Server 2025 as I see there is now official support.  I am planning to use PostgreSQL, and I was wondering which version to choose.  The 12.3 ISO comes with v15.10-1.  Is that Veeam’s recommendation for Server 2025?

The latest version of PostgreSQL is 17.2.  Try as I might, I can’t find any statements regarding PostgreSQL’s support for Windows Server 2025, but if Veeam support is willing to stand behind it, that’s good enough for me.

EDB doesn't list support for Windows 2025. v15 isn't even supported on 2022. I understand from other folks that v15 is working fine on Windows 2025, so ultimately my question is does Veeam provide official support for the combination of Veeam 12.3, Windows 2025, PostgreSQL v15. The implied answer is "yes", but I just want to double check before moving forward.

I must be reading a different document.

Microsoft Windows Server 2019
Microsoft Windows Server 2016
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
Microsoft Windows Server 2012
Microsoft Windows 11 (versions 21H2, 22H2, 23H2, 24H2)
Microsoft Windows 10 (versions 1909 to 22H2)
Microsoft Windows 10 LTS (versions LTSB 1607, LTSC 1809, LTSC 2021)

Configuration Database

PostgreSQL 14.x, 15.x (version 15.10.1 is included in the setup)

Here's the EDB supported OS list:
https://www.postgresql.org/download/windows/
The platform support section lists only 2016 and 2019 for v15.

I understand that Veeam supports Windows Server 2025 and Veeam supports PostgreSQL v15, but does Veeam support running PostgreSQL v15 on Server 2025?

That's what is used by default on any VBR server you install, Server 2025 included. Not really sure what's unclear about it.

We upgrade the Veeam server very rarely, and I am trying to be sure I'm setting it up the best way possible for the long term. It's my preference to dig in to all the nuances up front, so that I have the least possible chance of problems over the life of the server.

Let me a ask a different question: What's the best possible DB engine for Veeam on Server 2025? We are backing up 100 VMs or so, but also 300TB (40 million files) of NetApp NAS backup, and we expect that to double in 3 years. The Veeam server has a mirrored pair of NVMe disks for the OS and another pair dedicated to the DB. The data disk is a 1PB NVMe volume handled by a GRAID SR-1010. The server has 32 CPU cores, 768GB RAM. Veeam is connected to the NetApp NAS clusters via 4x100GbE ports. We also write weekly LTO9 tapes. MS made some changes to storage to improve NVMe performance in 2025 that and hot-patching are the reasons why 2025 is the first choice of OS.

It's not an issue for me to go with MS SQL 2022 Standard, but PSQL seems to be Veeam's DB engine of choice. Given the above, which is going to be the most reliable, least problems, and highest performing over the next 5 years or so?

If you read this forum, the future is abandoning MSSQL altogether.

In a different post Gostev has written that they plan to add/include automatic updates of the PGSQL engine in the Veeam updates, including migrating to PGSQL 17.
But for now the latest version of PGSQL 15 is the supported option and also that in a future version they will drop support for MSSQL as config DB.

Thank you all for the replies. I have moved forward with Veeam 12.3 and PSQL 15.10.1 on Windows Server 2025.

higher (if not latest) PostgreSQL version in Veeam 12.3

Post by tanyababes »

HI Veeam team,
We just like to know if there will be a plan to upgrade to higher postgreSQL version for DB? the current supported version is 15.x , and we just upgraded from 15.6 to 15.10 last December due to vulnerability issues...and today we're flagged again to upgrade to 15.11 for same issue. Thanks!

We're updating the PostgreSQL redist on VBR ISO every time we're updating the ISO. However, once it is installed, you have to upgrade it manually. From V13, we plan to start managing PostgreSQL updates ourself, starting from VBR on Linux. Thanks!
