Retention Policy for Quick Backups

Post by pirx »

I've problems understanding why retention for quick backups with per-machine backup files work like described below. My expectation was that for the VM I perform a quick backup one more restore point is added to retention. What impact have the number of VMs in a quick backup job?

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
If the backup chain is stored in a repository with the Use per-machine backup files option enabled, the retention increases in a different way. As a rule, the retention increases by the number of VMs from this chain for which quick backup was performed. It applies to the reverse incremental and forward incremental backup chains.

Hi Pirx,

To be honest, I also don't fully understand the explanation from the Help Center. It seems to me that this statement only affects the retention type "restore points." With the retention type set to "days," there is no need for an increase in retention.
However, with "restore points," it makes sense to temporarily increase the retention by 1 restore point for each quick backup. Running multiple quick backup sessions in a single day could lead to the removal of the oldest restore points too early if we strictly apply the configured "restore point" retention.

I will clarify the meaning of the Help Center text and get back to you.

Best regards,

I understand this at it is expected

Understood. But documentation sounds like if I run a quick backup for 5 VMs in a single job, the retention of all 5 VMs will be increased by 5. That doesn't make sense to me.

Yes, I understand it like you, which doesn't make any sense :)
I have asked our Tech Writer for clarification.

Hi Pirx,

Yes.

1.) It only affects backup chains with retention type "restore point".

2.) I saw that tech writer have updated the statement to:
If the backup chain is stored in a repository with the Use per-machine backup files option enabled, the number of the retention points increase in a different way. As a rule, the number of retention points increase by the number of VMs from this chain for which quick backup was performed. It applies to the reverse incremental and forward incremental backup chains.
