Cloud Connect : SOBR block to S3 transition

Post by Seb.pythoud »

Hello,

As a Veeam service provider, we have a Veeam Cloud Connect infrastructure that provides multiple tenants with a Data Domain backup resource within an SOBR.
We want to replace the Data Domain performance extent with an S3-compatible storage.

We cannot add the S3 or replace the DD with the S3 repository as a performance tier in the SOBR because it is not block or file storage.
Our goal is to ensure that no action is required on the tenant side during the transition, although we will, of course, accept active full backups.

Does anyone have an idea for this transition?

Thank you in advance.

I dont think you can do this via SOBR, what I suppose you can do is create S3 repo's and bind them to a different SOBR and expose those to the reseller / companies.

So far, this is what we've done :

- Create a new S3 SOBR
- Seal the DD extend in old SOBR
- Add the S3 SOBR as backup ressource for tenants and make it default for the tenant/companies

After a few tests, it seeams to work and run new active backups to the S3 SOBR.

Now the problem is : how to move the DD backups with monthly or yearly rententions into the S3 SOBR ?

Hello S. Pythoud,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to move tenant data from "simple repositories" to "object storage repositories." The Backup Move feature does not support Veeam Cloud Connect repositories. We have this request on our feature request list, but there is currently no ETA for when we can deliver this capability. I will add you as a +1 for this request.

As a workaround, you could configure your Data Domain repository as a Scale-Out Backup Repository (SOBR) and use SOBR offloading to the capacity tier with the "MOVE" policy to transfer GFS backups to an S3 bucket. Please keep in mind that you need to maintain the performance tier (Data Domain or another type) for the background retention job; otherwise, the offloaded backup files will not be removed by retention.

Best,
Fabian
