Veeam Proxy Types: General Purpose vs VMware Proxy

Post by LEWISF »

Sorry for the noob question but I need some confirmation/clarification.

I understand the role of a proxy:

That a backup proxy is an architecture component that operates as a data mover and transfers data between source and target, the proxy processes jobs and delivers backup traffic.

That backup proxy tasks include:
  • Retrieving VM data from storage
  • Compressing
  • Deduplicating
  • Encrypting
  • Sending it to the backup repository
I need confirmation that if I have jobs that are backing up VMs then I need a VMware proxy, and if I have a job that is doing files / file shares / folders, then I need a General-purpose backup proxy? One proxy type cannot do both tasks, correct?

You are correct that you would need multiple types of proxies in your example. Think of them as roles that can be assigned to different servers or to the same server. The distribution of the roles depends on the resources needed for your environment and data protection requirements.

Most importantly, one server CAN do both tasks. And even data movers are exact same. There are different proxy types only because they require different, platform-specific settings. It would be very confusing for us to ask users to specify VMware-specific settings, when they are only trying to protect file shares.
