I have engaged with Veeam support around an issue I have with long term retention of Azure files snapshots. We would like to keep 12 monthly snapshots, taken every 6 months so we have 6 years of Azure file snapshots. Along with this, we'd like daily snapshots for the remaining 187 snapshots, totalling 199 snapshots. The issue comes in because of the way Azure file retention works. It is only able to delete the oldest Azure file snapshot associated with the storage account and there is a hard limit of 200 snapshots for Azure files. At some point the oldest snapshot will be a snapshot with a monthly flag associated with it but it would not be able to be deleted because there would not be 12 monthly snapshots, this would then cause the daily backup job to fail.
I think it would be useful if the Veeam job would be able to identify that the last snapshot is a monthly one and instead delete the oldest daily snapshot, allowing the backup job to continue to work.
