Backup size on Veeam backup repository

Post by Hirosh »

Hi Guys,

we are using Hpe apollo Server & Storeonce appliance as repositories in our veem environment(3-2-1 strategy). i am wondering about information which shows under backup repositories for each repository, 3 columns in praticular:
1.Capacity( which is clear)
2.Free(also clear )
3.Used Space(somehow clear)

we have two apollo servers which we have created scale out repositories on.i am wondering since the size showed under"used space" is the size of backup before compression, im not sure if i have the correct understanding. we are planning for an offsite backup (backup copy from storeonce to cloud). i have to estimate how much storage we would need on cloud, therefore i need to know how much the size of the backup before compression & deduplication. any ideas where can i export this information precisely?

best regards,
Hirosh

Hi Hirosh,

The Used Space value refers to what Veeam actually wrote to the storage -- if the storage performs additional deduplication/compression afterwards, that is not tracked by this value.

So the Used Space value should be enough to get an estimate, and I would round the estimate up to a nearest reasonable value to allow a little overhead.

Hi David,

thanks for the information.if we use veeam cloud connect to keep our backups in cloud, would we need the "capacity" size or the"used Space" size in our cloud repository?
i know that WAN accelerator option is also available, how much capacity that would save in transmission base on your experience?

Used Space is what you want to focus on.

As for WAN Accelerators, it will depend heavily on the workloads being passed. Our User Guide page for WAN Acceleration explains how it works a bit more clearly, and with your workload you can understand likely if WAN acceleration will likely have a positive effect.
