No SQL Servers Show under Database Restore After 12.3.1.1139 Upgrade

Hello Veeam Community....

Last week I updated to 12.3.1.1139 from 12.2.0.334 for that CVE that got posted. I upgraded four environments on 12.2.0.334 with no issue, up to now. My operations team is telling me there are no SQL servers showing when they restore via Restore - VMware vSphere- Restore from Backup - Database Restore - Microsoft SQL Server. In the next window, none of the SQL servers we backup are showing now. Did Veeam change how SQL restores are done 12.2 to 12.3? Thanks for any help you can provide...

Hi, Harold.

No, we don't change how existing features behave in minor releases. Nor are there any known issues with this functionality in 12.3 (and it is already 4 months old so this would have came out by now).

So this is either specific to your environment, or a bug in 12.3.1 (fairly unlikely for a maintenance release though, as it's mostly just a cumulative rollup of all hotfixes issued since we shipped 12.3). Either way, please contact our Support to get to the bottom of this.

Okay, will do. I would chalk it up as a fluke or something went wrong with the upgrade on one of the installations, but all four of my Veeam B&R installations are doing the same exact thing. Case 07648269 is in.

Any update to this? I just upgraded and just so happen to need to do a SQL DB restore, and i'm running in to the same thing. No SQL servers show up in the list to restore from.

Ah, seems to work if you go into the 'Backups' list, expand the server you need, right click, and 'Restore Application Items' instead.

On my ticket the support engineer performed an upgrade to version 12.3.1.1139 and was able to recreate. So it appears to be a UI bug I guess? Waiting for confirmation.

Will there be a new release because of something like this? None of our Veeam Servers are in AD so we don't need to upgrade right away and would be able to wait...

No, of course not. It is simply not sustainable to ship a new release for every bug found, as it will require daily releases so we will just create a hotfix for this, as usual. However, if this turns to be a common issue, we are often able to update the ISO and integrate a hotfix in it, so that new installs don't have to patch manually.

Same behaviour here after upgrade to 12.3.1.1139: no objects in SQL serer restore when started from the ribbon bar. From the context menu of the server in Backups/Disk/[Job Name]/[Server name], restore works.

I made a case with Veeam support for this same issue, #07654575, and they confirm that it is a visual bug. They will fix it in the next release, not via a hotfix:

"As per our internal documentation it is a known issue for 12.3.1 VBR.

For now they there is a with workaround (that we are aware of): to run the wizard from Home\Backups\backup or using application items - restore points are available.

Expected resolution of this cosmetic GUI issue is expected in next version of VBR. "

Ok, not good since there is another bug (at least in .310) which makes restore/finding restore points via Backups -> Disk impossible.
I opened a case in the past (07233106) but since this only happens every few weeks and a reboot helped i did not pursue this further.

Now i am basically blocked (in part to my own fault) from installing the latest version because the the new issue blocks the workaround for our initial "visual bug"

We will publish a hotfix later today + update the ISOs to include and auto install one.

Gostev, are you sure this is the correct kb/hotfix? I have not downloaded it yet, but the description in the linked KB describes Microsoft's Retirement of Basic SKU Public IP Addresses and the issues with this. There is no mention of the issue discussed in this thread.

Yep, 100% sure. There are 3 hotfixes in this package, one major issue due to a change in Microsoft Azure and a couple of cosmetic issues (this thread + excessive logging in one specific scenario).

OK, thanks for the clarification. The hotfix has to be installed on the B&R server only or also on PCs with the Console?

Console should download relevant hotfixes automatically when connecting to an updated backup server. I don't believe any fixes are on the console side though.

Tried to install the hotfix but after q few seconds it's finished but still no SQL servers in the SQL restore. I'm running Veeam B&R 13.3.1.1139 which is mentioned here. I tried stopping all services upfront. I tried running the hotfix as an administrator. I tried stopping and disabling all services. Nothing worked.

I thought I mentioned it as a reaction on hotfix link provided by Gostev. I've installed the latest Veeam B&R ISO, version 12.3.2.3617, after which the issue was solved!
