Veeam lab on vmware workstation?

Post by Gravelrider »

Hi there

I would like to build a lab environment for Veeam vmce study. Unfortunately I have no dedicated lab equipment but I do have a workstation with 64 GB of RAM. I was thinking of doing this in VMware workstation. Anyone tried this that can put me in right direction?

I am thinking of setting up nested esxi. Earlier on I created a VM with VBR and another VM as backup target (directly on workstation, not nested) but that did not work. The VBR blue screened on me

I am thinking of creating

-Windows 2022 DC/DNS
-Windows 2022 VBR
-Nested ESXi which will host small windows and Linux VM.
-Another Nested ESXi so I can do failover etc

Cheers

There is no issue with building what you are suggesting. From the details shared, it is difficult to diagnose why the VBR server was blue-screened. Maybe ensure everything is fully patched and you didn't overcommit on memory from the beginning.

I'm running my home lab on VMware Workstation with multiple nested hypervisors without any issues.
In general it should work and also it's not expected to run into a bluescreen, so I would start and re-create the VBR VM.

BSODs are usually caused by antivirus apps. It's a very common issue in our Support irrespective of where Veeam is deployed.
