Need help understanding CDP I/O filter installation
Hi,
I have CDP I/O filter deployed to a vCenter cluster with some hosts. VBR installs the package on the cluster and vCenter then deploys the I/O filter to the hosts when they placed into maintenance mode.
I then add more hosts to the cluster and vCenter again deploys the I/O filter to the new hosts as they are added.
In the documentation it says, "After you install the I/O filter on the clusters, Veeam Backup & Replication automatically installs the filter on all hosts added to the clusters."
If the vCenter managing the cluster is installing the I/O filter on the host, then what is the VBR server doing exactly according to the documentation?
Thanks
Kevin

Re: Need help understanding CDP I/O filter installation
The documentation contains some inaccuracies and will soon be corrected.
In general, the system for installing filters works as follows:
- We create a task on a backup server for installing I/O filters
- This task triggers a task on vCenter/cluster for filter installation
- If DRS is enabled, vCenter automatically places clusters into maintenance mode and installs filters on them
- If a new host is added to a cluster where CDP components are already installed:
--vCenter automatically installs the filter on the new host but doesn’t configure it
--The user must still use the IO filter manager to apply the necessary settings to filter installed on the new host
Thanks!

Re: Need help understanding CDP I/O filter installation
Hi Veremin,
Thank you for the reply.
It seems like a bit of crucial information is completely missing from the documentation which has been causing us all kinds of problems with failed CDP replicas.
We've always just been told by Veeam support to re-create the CDP replica, now after logging another case a month ago we're finally getting to what the actual problem is.
I don't see anything documented about this step when adding hosts to a cluster.
"--The user must still use the IO filter manager to apply the necessary settings to filter installed on the new host"
How is it done?
What effect does this have on the cluster and the rest of the hosts in cluster?
When will the documentation be updated?
Thanks
Kevin

Re: Need help understanding CDP I/O filter installation
When going through the wizard again, the backup server detects a new host within the cluster, identifies the installed filter, and configures it to meet its requirements.
We will gather the necessary information soon and add it to our documentation.
Am I correct in understanding that you’re primarily interested in adding there details related to the appearance of new hosts in the cluster and the necessary steps, such as re-running the I/O filter installation wizard?
Thanks!

Re: Need help understanding CDP I/O filter installation
Hi,
Yes, that is correct
The documentation should be updated to include the steps required when new host is added to a cluster.
This statement should also be removed "Veeam Backup & Replication automatically installs the filter on all hosts added to the clusters" as that is not accurate. vCenter installs the IO filter and VBR does nothing.
Thanks
Kevin
