Unexpected Crash to BIOS during Backup

Post by flyfisher604 »

Case # 07697704

Veeam crashes to the BIOS during Volume Level backup. This problem began after upgrading to 6.3.0 and continues in 6.3.1. It happens during scheduled and manual backups. Occasionally (maybe 1 out of 10 times), it will complete a manual backup without issue.

Windows 24H2 (26100.3915) all updates applied.

It successfully backs up the EFI System Partition but fails after a few minutes of backing up the C: drive. The job's configuration has remained unchanged for many years. It had previously worked without issue since the introduction of the Veeam agent.

Prior searches for solutions showed several other users on Reddit complaining of the same issue.

Windows Virus & Threat Protection has been configured with exclusions per Veeam #kb2034.

The PC is completely stable and has never experienced crashes. This issue is very repeatable.

Hi Don,

I think its best to await support for this, as this can only be troubleshooted via logs and that's not the purpose of this forum.
Did you also check / supplied windows event logs (Application & system)?

Hi !
Try checking the Windows Event Viewer to see if any errors are logged, especially related to the disk. I've experienced a similar issue before, which turned out to be caused by bad sectors on my SSD.

After reviewing the event log (yet again), I found an error with Event ID 36: "The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because the shadow copy storage could not grow due to a user-imposed limit." Excited that I had found the issue, I reviewed the VSS Shadow Copy settings and increased the available disk space.

Unfortunately, after attempting another backup, at just over 2 hours, the PC again crashed with a blue screen and rebooted into the BIOS.

Reviewing the event logs showed no errors. I was hopeful Event 36 was the issue, but it doesn't look like it was.

I'm open to any other ideas. After using Veeam for years, I don't want to look for a new solution now.

Any help would be great — nothing in the Windows Event Logs.

Since I'm using the free product, my support requests keep timing out and getting auto-closed. I've found several other people on Reddit complaining about the same issue, and their support tickets also get auto-closed. It seems strange that Veeam would not want to resolve a lurking Blue Screen crash issue.

Hi Flyfisher

Please continue troubleshooting the issue with the assigned support engineer in your support case.

This forum is not an alternative way to get support for technical issues, our support team is required to investigate and solve the issue.

Thank you,

The offending software that is crashing your machine (usually it's a misbehaving driver) can only be found by examining the crash dump file.
