Restore data from an Organization which no longer exists

Post by raftbone »

Hi all

Maybe a stupid question, but how do I restore data from an M365 Organization which no longer exists?
I have a repository, which contains all backup data from a Microsoft 365 tenant. This tenant does no longer exist, since the company was aquired by our company. This means, I can no longer add this M365 organization to Veeam M365 Backup, since all the admin accounts no longer exist.

The repository is still present on our Veeam servers, but since the organization is not available I cannot browse the data of this organization.

The repository was added to a new Veeam M365 server which never had any connection to the "old" organization.

Does anyone have an idea?

Hello Raftbone,

The restore process varies based on the repository type:

Object Storage Repositories: The original organization must be added to the backup server to restore data. While we plan to remove this limitation in a future version, we cannot provide an ETA. Currently, restoration from these repositories without the original organization is not possible.

Jet Database Repositories: Recovery is still possible. To initiate a restore, disable all VB365 services and use Veeam Explorer for Exchange/OneDrive/SharePoint to open your jet database repository.

Thanks for your response. Hopefully, this limitation will be removed soon. We had to move our main backup server for Veeam M365 to a new server and I cannot add "old" organizations since they no longer exist, but of course we still have those repositories.

For now, I will keep the old server powered off and power it on, if a restore is needed, but the option to restore data from no longer existing organizations is an urgent need for us.

Because why backing up the M365 organization of a company we aquired, when we are no longer available to do restores of their old tenant after migrating it to our tenant.

Good Afternoon

We are in this same situation with one of our clients. Is it still a limitation of Object Storage repositories that the original tenant must be added to the backup server to perform recovery?

Hi Matt

Yes, this requirement still exists for object storage repositories.

Hi Fabian,
will this limitation be addressed more like for v9+ or will it be v8.1.x?

Hi Karsten

There are no short-term plans to remove this limitation.

I hope this can be fixed, it's a serious flaw.

Does this limitation exist with Veeam Data Cloud?
