Hey folks,
I would like to copy my backup files stored on Object Storage to tape. According to the Veeam documentation, the only method is to use Object Storage Backup to Tape.
My first problem is that this is subject to licensing, knowing that these are VM backups, this will quickly add up cost-wise.
My other question is if I want to restore a VM directly from the tape library, will this be possible or should I restore the VBK file that interests me upstream before being able to restore the VM.
My need:
Prod => Backup Job To S3 => Backup To Tape

Re: Copy Backups files from Object Storage Backup to Tape
Hi Philippe,
There are no Veeam backup files (VBK or VIB) on object storage.
If you are referring to machine backups stored on object storage repositories, you should use a normal "Backup To Tape" job.
Best,
Fabian

Entire VM Restore back to the hypervisor is possible directly from tape.My other question is if I want to restore a VM directly from the tape library, will this be possible or should I restore the VBK file that interests me upstream before being able to restore the VM.

Re: Copy Backups files from Object Storage Backup to Tape
Hi Fabian,
thanks for your answer. Just to be sure it's possible to backup my VMs to an S3 Storage and then use a classic "Backup to Tape" to copy my backup to tape ?
In the documentation I found "The backups that can be archived to tapes also include those created with backup jobs that directly write backup data to object storage repositories." but I dont know if it a reference to Object to tape or backup to tape

Re: Copy Backups files from Object Storage Backup to Tape
Hi Philippe
The backups that can be archived to tapes also include those created with backup jobs that directly write backup data to object storage repositories is from here and is a valid statement for your scenario.
Test from my lab:
- "Direct to object" with object first.
- Then a "Backup To Tape" job:

Best,
Fabian
