Veeam Monitor 4 - Collector State : Stopped !!!

Post by a18041967 »

I've installed Monitor v4 and it's been working happily for a week, suddenly at 2am in the morning all performance data stopped and the data collector is showing as stopped.

The collector service is running and restarts, are there any log files that may help identify the cause. I'm guessing that it's either related to password changes or Active Directory group policy stopping a service. I've reinstalled the software, bounced the server and still no joy.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Also one final question Veeam monitor, is there a limit to the number of VMware hosts that Monitor 4 can support both the free & chargeable versions, I'm currently looking at 100 hosts, but this could increase to 700?

Hello Duncan, you can access collector logs using Veeam Monitor Server Settings application.

There is no limit on host number in free version. For performance reasons, if you want to monitor more than 100 hosts, you should plan on upgrading to vCenter 4.0 because it has much better scalability for performance monitoring than Virtual Center 2.5. Veeam Monitor 4.0 engine is specifically optimized for fetching performance data from vCenter Server 4.0.

Checked the logs and found the following:

06/17/09 14:48:18 Inform 0x0BC0 S4138-Swansea-Pontardulais "A database error (code:0x80040E37, ) has occured in context of { CALL sp_getlastdevicetime;1 (?) }. Error information follows"
06/17/09 14:48:18 Inform 0x0750 S403-Croydon-Church-Street "Error record 1 of 1: Invalid object name 'S768-Ashton-under-Lyne-Snipe-Retail-Park_Perfdata_HIGH'."
06/17/09 14:48:18 Inform 0x0C28 S768-Ashton-under-Lyne-Snipe-Retail-Park "A database error (code:0x80040E37, ) has occured in context of { CALL sp_getlastdevicetime;1 (?) }. Error information follows"
06/17/09 14:48:18 Inform 0x0DEC S432-Wolverhampton-Wulfrun-Centre "Error record 1 of 1: Invalid object name 'S768-Ashton-under-Lyne-Snipe-Retail-Park_Perfdata_HIGH'."
06/17/09 14:48:18 Inform 0x08FC S436-Cardiff-Queens-Arcade "Error record 1 of 1: Invalid object name 'S768-Ashton-under-Lyne-Snipe-Retail-Park_Perfdata_HIGH'."

The common and most noticeable thing was the ''S768-Ashton-under-Lyne-Snipe-Retail-Park_Perfdata_HIGH'' this was an ESX host that had been entered, but was not showing as having any connection issues but also failed to have any data associated with it. I've now removed this server restarted the collector service and it is now showing as idle and data is being retreived.

Just to follow up on your response to the number of supported servers, we are not using Virtual Center for this implementation ( due to an issue we have with VMware and the new vSphere licensing ) and are using Veeam Monitor to connect directly to each of the vSphere hosts.

Thanks for your help.

Duncan, if you are not using vCenter servers, then you will probably start seeing problems after adding more than a few dozens of individual ESX hosts. Veeam Monitor will simply not keep up collecting performance data with such a large amount of individual hosts, since each host requires separate connection.

As for the error, I will need developers to take a look and comment.

Actually I take it back, dev lead told me we have tested on up to 100 standalone hosts with powerful Veeam Monitor host, but still 700 is probably unrealistic in case of standalone hosts.
