Disable Fast Clone for SMB on One Repository

Post by EricinIT »

Here's some background on the situation. A customer upgraded a NAS which only supports SMB in the configuration they are using but this new model gets the {ReFs.SetFileIntegrity}. error when Veeam writes backup files to it. The customer has other NAS devices with SMB Repositories. In this situation, we'd like to continue to use Fast Clone on the other NAS devices which Veeam works with fast clone and only disable it on the new NAS Backup Repository. We've confirmed setting the Registry Value for UseCifsVirtualSynthetic resolves the situation on the new NAS as described in the Veeam KB4381. However, this appears to be a global setting and would affect all SMB NAS Backup Repositories. Is there a method to make this setting only apply to a specific Backup Repository?

Hi Eric,

You are correct, as per the KB, UseCifsVirtualSynthetic is global and will disable Fast Clone for all SMB repositories, there isn't a mechanism at this time for disabling it just for one repository.

Can I ask, is it imperative that the repository be SMB? Is it possible to present the storage as iscsi or NFS instead?

Hi David,

The customer is using a Veeam rotated drives repository on a Buffalo NAS. Unfortunately, NFS nor iSCSI are protocol options on the USB external drive on the Buffalo NAS. NFS is supported on the internal storage though, just not the external drive. The customer is plugging an external drive into the USB port on the NAS so they can rotate that drive out easily. Thanks for letting me know and we'll look into alternatives to make something work.

Eric
