Do You have to have a proxy server?

Post by sigdoc1 »

We have a small Veeam installation with a VMware cluster with three nodes and about a dozen VMs. We use a VSAN with drives from all of the 3 nodes. The drives are SSD. Our VRO server is in a nearby building connected by 2 100 fiber links and the VRO server has SSDs as well. Do we need to have a proxy server? We have not noted any performance issues and from what I read the proxy server just helps with communication performance.

Having the proxy close to the source VM helps by compressing the data before it goes over the fiber link to be sent to the repository server(Or target proxy, if we're talking about replication jobs). Sure, you don't have to have a separate proxy, but it will bring down the amount of data going between buildings.

No, you don’t need a proxy server right now, but you should plan for one if your infrastructure or backup requirements grow.

It sounds like you have a solid setup with your VMware cluster and SSDs across both your nodes and VRO server. Since you haven't experienced any performance issues so far, you might not need a proxy server right now.
