About the VBR communication port during FLR

Post by netwichi »

Please confirm the communication port of VBR during FLR.

■Prerequisites
The data backed up with VB4AWS is copied to another S3 using the VBR backup copy job.
The FLR is performed with VBR from this copied data.

■Confirmation 1
The communication port is written as follows.
(From)Helper Host (To)Backup Repository TCP 2500-3300
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... elper_host

Is it correct that the following applies when the Backup Repository is S3?
Is there no direct communication from the Helper Host to S3?
*When I actually checked the packets, I could not confirm any communication from the Helper Host to S3, so I think it is communication between the Helper Host and the Mount Server.

■Confirmation 2
There is communication (From)Mount Server (To)Backup Repository TCP 2500-3300, but if the Repository is S3, is it correct that it becomes (From)Mount Server (To)S3 TCP 443?
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... unt_server

■Confirmation 3
(From) Backup server (To) Helper host No packets were found for TCP6162, 32768-60999.
Is it expected behavior that the above communication ports are not used when performing FLR from VB4AWS copy data, as in this case?

Hello Netwichi,

Keep in mind that we require a gateway server to connect to object storage repositories. When we say "Helper Host to backup repository," we basically mean "helper host to gateway server of your S3 bucket." I will check with our Help Center team to see if we can clarify this further in the documentation.

1.) The Helper Host with FLR restore is only used for restores from "Linux, Unix, and Other File Systems". The Helper Host will need to communicate with the backup repository/gateway server to access the backup for FLR restore.

2.) "Mount server to gateway server" will require Port 2500-3300: only the gateway server will communicate with the object storage on port 443.

3.) It depends. If you are restoring files from "Linux, Unix, and Other File Systems" and have selected the Helper Host restore method, you should see traffic on these ports. However, you will not see this traffic when restoring files from a "Windows filesystem" backup, as Windows FLR does not use helper hosts.

Best,
Fabian
