What options do we have? Azure VMs

Post by EviLin »

Hello,

We have bought Veeam Data Protection VUL licenses to cover our around 200 Azure VMs and some Paas services, and Veeam Cloud Vault for our backup Repo.
But what are our options and the best options for this case?

We were adviced from a Veeam solution architect to use VBR and then deploy Veeam agents on all VMs, and handle those as physical servers.

Some of our requirements, we need to use incremental forever, and use Veeam Data Cloud vault as our single backup Repo.

We were adviced not to use Veeam for Azure to backup Azure VMs Because we cant store the snapshots in VDC vault, so we Should use some Azure blob as Repo for those?

And then there is the 'Cloud Machine' solution, how does that differ from a normal Veeam agent like physical server, it seems like the Cloud Machine solution works without opening alot of ports, by using native Azure Network? And can those VMs store the backup in VDC Vault? Is there any disadvantage by the cloud machine solution? Cant find much about it.

Alot of questions, sorry. 😁

While you cannot store snapshots in Vault, you certainly can create regular backups for VMs using a cloud-native solution (Veeam Backup for Azure) and these backups can be stored in Veeam Vault.

Here is how you can register Veeam Vault in the current version of Veeam Backup for Azure > https://www.veeam.com/kb4736
Native integration with Veeam Vault is coming shortly (in the upcoming release of VB).

Hope it helps!

Hello Vitaliy,

Does it mean that we could use Veeam backup for Azure, and not storing any snapshots in Azure? And just store regular backup in VDC Vault, like we would with VBR and Veeam agents on the VMs?

Yes, that's correct. You can create regular backups of Azure VMs and store these backups in Veeam Vault.

So forever incremental backups, immutable backups stored in Veeam Vault, without storing Any Snapshots in Azure Blob?

We only want to store everything in Veeam Vault.

Snapshot will still be created for incremental backups to run (1 snapshot will be kept to avoid additional traffic, which is costly), but yes, you got the idea right.
