Sharepoint - slow restore, what are the options

Post by lmendel »

I'm aware of the M365 throttling, but what are the options in case of large Sharepoint library restores? We recently had to do a site collection restore, which was luckily only few GB's in size but still restore still took over 15hr's to complete. Another test we run for the same tenant, allowed us to restore 2.3GB of data in just under 3hr's, which gives under 2mbit restore speed. We use Wasabi for storage and restores to local server, are pretty OK.

What can realistically be done if we need to restore TB's of data? Staged restore to local server and manual upload is out of the question, permissions will be lost.

Thanks
Lukasz

Hi Lukasz,

As a first step, I recommend contacting our customer support team so they can review your logs and system in detail.

From what I've heard from other customers, with the right infrastructure (following best practices, using object storage as your repository, and having properly sized proxy servers), you should be able to process more than 1TB per day. However, this also depends on Microsoft and their API limits; smaller M365 customers may experience throttling sooner due to lower daily API quotas.

Don't forget to share the case number with us.

Best regards,
