Cross-tenant restoring (migration)?

Post by mrhcarlin »

Just wondering if VBO supports, in any way, cross-tenant restoring? We'll want to be able to restore mailbox data at a minimum. OneDrive and SharePoint are less important.

For context, we will be creating a new tenant soon because our current one is in the wrong region as well as having an old company name that we want to completely separate ourselves from. A company called BitTitan have a product called MigrationWiz that can apparently achieve what we’re looking for, albeit at cost; but since we already own VBO, I figured I’d look into using it to do the same thing (or similar) to save money.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

For mailboxes, cross-tenant restores are possible; but you will have to restore them one by one (no bulk options in this case) and you will need to create [empty] target mailboxes in advance as this is something VBO cannot perform.

SharePoint and OneDrive restores are currently limited to the original tenant only.

Thanks

Thanks!

And just quickly: I know you guys are working on functionality/features to do full tenant-to-tenant migrations. What sort of timeline could the public expect this? Just curious as we obviously don't want to spend too money on a separate product to do our own migration if VBO will soon support it. (Although we could almost certainly get by with one-by-one mailbox migrations since we're quite a small business!)

Matt,

From what I know, we do plan to further enhance restore functionality and, for example, add cross-tenant scenarios for SharePoint. However, VBO will still be focused on data protection.

How many mailboxes do you need to migrate? You could consider using PowerShell automation to do this...

Adding this feature will be a super cool addition. We have multiple SPO tenants like development and QC, so for troubleshooting and replicating a change to another will be easy with cross tenant restore.

OK, so doing them individually, how many concurrent restores can we do? I.E. Can I just kick off mailboxes one by one and let the jobs stack up?

Mailboxes can be done one by one yes. You can already restore to a different location for mailboxes (as this topic is about SharePoint).

Hello, is it still not possible to restore onedrive and sharepoint to a different tenant? We have a subsidiary company with its own tenant but we want to move them into our tenant for licensing reasons and AD synchronisation as we have a single domain forest on premise for all our subsidiary companies.

[MERGED] New Feature Request - Cross Tenant Restore

Post by tmullen@brkl.com »

The ability to perform cross tenant restores (currently not supported), would allow companies who merge / acquire to efficiently capture needed data.
Is this (or can this) be slated for future enhancement / feature ?

Hi Tim,

Welcome to the forum.
Cross-tenant restore is supported. However, I don't see how this would be feasible for SharePoint. For example, during a restore, SharePoint sites would lose their previous owners and configured permissions, because the new M365 tenant doesn't recognize the old user accounts.

I'd also like to add that our product is a Backup and Recovery application, not a migration tool.
Especially for Exchange migrations, I recommend researching purpose-built migration services or tools. There are many available—you can find several with a quick Google search. These services typically offer the ability to pre-sync entire mailboxes, including permission mappings. On the actual migration day, you only need to perform a final sync and then update DNS records and Outlook configurations to point to the new tenant. Such services can significantly reduce the amount of work required on migration day.

Best regards,
Fabian
