Is it possible to move files directly to S3 glacier storage class with SOBR
My customer is from China and China region AWS do not have S3 glacier . Beside my customer hope they can use veeam back function to move files directly to S3 glacier storage class without SOBR.
I find out that :If use SOBR Archive Tier , it always first written to the S3 bucket associated with the Capacity Tier .When the configured archiving policy conditions are met (for example, GFS retention thresholds are reached, or the “Move to Archive Tier after N days” setting is enabled), Veeam invokes the S3 API to perform a storage class transition, changing the object from STANDARD to:GLACIER (Flexible Retrieval), orDEEP_ARCHIVE (depending on selection).
First, please confirm my understanding is right .
Second is it possible to move files directly to S3 glacier storage class under SOBR without storage class transition ? My customer do not want to pay for the transform fee by using S3 API . They just want to move files directly to S3 glacier storage class . They are using Veeam v12+ version . Is it possible to do that ?

No, your understanding is not right. Such approach would be extremely expensive due to high API costs of S3 Glacier. Therefore backups are actively transformed when they are moved from S3 Standard to Glacier.
Yes, Capacity Tier is completely optional in SOBR these days so they can go direct from on-prem backup repository (SOBR Performance Tier) to Glacier (SOBR Archive Tier).

Thank you for your reply! It is great that Veeam can meet customer's need.
So is there any step by step user manual for going direct from on-prem backup repository (SOBR Performance Tier) to Glacier (SOBR Archive Tier)? Because from Veeam doc https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120, these steps are for S3 glaciers in AWS global region . But customer and I have tired these steps and we can not get the bucket list from S3 . Because China region AWS do not have S3 glacier .Please kindly give me some instructions to set up the on-prem -> SOBR Archive Tier directly . Thank you in advance on behalf of the client.

Re: Is it possible to move files directly to S3 glacier storage class with SOBR
Actually there are no steps to take or any sort of complex setup, you just don't use Capacity Tier in SOBR. In other words, you should create a SOBR that has only Performance Tier and Archive Tier configured, with Capacity Tier left unchecked.
By the way the link is shared is irrelevant, you need to use Amazon S3 Glacier wizard to register your Glacier storage with Veeam.
If your customer is experiencing difficulties and needs help with this, please have them open a support case (we can't provide assistance over forum posts). Thanks

Re: Is it possible to move files directly to S3 glacier storage class with SOBR
I have updated these info to customer and they consult Veeam china customer support hotline . Veeam China Support told the customer that all backups to S3 Glacier are full backups, not incremental.
For example, if the first week's backup is 5GB, and in the second week the data grows to 6GB, Veeam will back up the full 5GB+6GB to S3 Glacier in these 2 weeks.
This causes a large amount of S3 write operations, which seems inefficient. Is there a way to change this behavior?

It's a misunderstanding. By default backups are offloaded to Archive Tier in a forever-incremental manner (only changes from the previous backup). You can make it so that each backup is an independent full backup if required for compliance, however it's not a default setting.
