Microsoft Exchange in a separate Network

Post by marcy »

Hi,

Hello, I have two Exchange servers that are operated in a separate network. In the VEEAM configuration, I have enabled application-aware backup for both VMs.

Now VEEAM is complaining that no Guest Interaction Proxy is installed. What would be the “best” course of action here? Do I need a separate Windows machine/VM on which I can make the function available, just for the two Exchange VMs, or are there other options?

Best regards

Hi Marcel,

VEEAM is complaining that no Guest Interaction Proxy is installed sounds wrong. You should have at least one - by default, the backup server itself acts as a Guest Interaction Proxy. Any managed Windows machine can serve this role.

I suggest opening a support case to investigate the “no Guest Interaction Proxy is installed” error in more detail.

Guest Interaction Proxy selection can be set to “automatic selection” or “manually selected” in the backup job settings.
You can add additional Windows machines which you want to use as Guest Interaction Proxies in the “Managed Server” section.

Yes, i know - but the question is: Can i install the Guest Interaction Proxy Software on an Exchange Server or do i need a new windows VM with the role?

Your Exchange Server is a Windows machine, so in theory, you can add it as a managed Windows Server and use it as a Guest Interaction Proxy.
However, we do not recommend deploying Veeam infrastructure components on mission-critical servers such as Microsoft Exchange.
It is supported, but not recommended.
