Linux file restores from Enterprise Manager
Hello,
We'd like to use file restore in VMs from Enterprise Manager. It works fine for Windows, uses the VBR VM as mount server, but for Linux, I get an error panel telling that mount host or helper appliance have not been configured, and unlike using the file restore wizard in VBR, there is no way to chose the target VM there.
I'm not sure what I should configure at this point? We'd like to avoid deploying dedicated VMs for this, this feature will barely be used, but needs to work anyway.
Thanks.

Re: Linux file restores from Enterprise Manager
Hi FrenchBlue,
Please see our help center article and let me know if you have any additional questions.
This process should become easier with our upcoming major release, which will support Mount Server on Linux. This will potentially eliminate the need for a helper host or helper appliance, as the backup server itself can serve as a mount host for Linux backups.
Best regards,
Fabian

Hello,
Thanks for the link, so that's was I was afraid of, at the moment we have no choice but deploying helper VMs appliances.
Is there a vague, approximative ETA for the feature you mention?

Re: Linux file restores from Enterprise Manager
Yes, for now you will need a helper appliance/host for FLR restore in Enterprise Manager. You can deploy a small Linux VM; it doesn’t require many hardware resources. Or use an existing Linux machine in your network as a helper host.
Our new Veeam Software Appliance (Linux based Backup Server, v13) will be released in Q3 2025 as a fully supported preview for new deployments only. The v13 release for Windows-based backup servers (VDP Release) is scheduled for Q4 2025.
Both Editions of V13 will allow you to use Linux based Mount Servers for your repositories.
Best regards,
Fabian

Re: Linux file restores from Enterprise Manager
Thanks, sounds good. I've browsed the docs and googled, but didn't find the page for configuring/defining a Linux helper appliance in a standard Vsphere environment?

Re: Linux file restores from Enterprise Manager
A helper host/appliance is configured during a Guest File Restore of a Linux machine in the backup console. This configuration is read by the Enterprise Manager during a FLR Restore.

Re: Linux file restores from Enterprise Manager
OK thanks, but then once it has been used as a helper VM there, it will remain usable like that and be used by subsequent file restores in EM?

Re: Linux file restores from Enterprise Manager
Yes. Run a restore once in the backup console and Enterprise Manager will use your configuration for further restores.

Re: Linux file restores from Enterprise Manager
Well, after a few unsuccessful tests, we're going to wait for V13 for this, seems it will be easier.
