Field or option that allows seeing in the GUI if the media set on a tape is already closed or not

Post by vlad.barabas »

Hello Veeam team!
Is there a possibility to add a field/option that would allow us to see in the GUI if the media set on a tape is already closed or not? We frequently ask ourselves what stage a tape is at and we have to investigate the logs to understand this.
Thank you,

Hi vlad.barabas, welcome to the forums.

Media sets remain open until a new media set is created, so going to the Media Pool view and viewing the tapes and sorting by Media Set will give a clear indication:

For example, H00007L5's media set is closed here since a newer media set exists.

Same for GFS Media Pools.

Keep in mind a media set may be closed outside of the configured media set creation rules as noted in the User Guide link above, so keep an eye on it.

Hello David! Thank you for the explanations. I use GFS media pool (consisting of 4 tapes - 2 Weekly and 2 Monthly) with a standalone drive. My confusion was how/if I can tell just by reading a tape that it is closed and no longer accepts writing of another media set. Because I have a tape from the 2 monthly ones that tells me it is closed...(I still don't know why it was closed). That's why I was thinking that an option in this regard in the GUI would be helpful...

Hi Vlad,

Understood, however I think there's a bit of a confusion -- media sets close during Tape job runs, so if a newer media set is present in the list like I showed, it means the previous media set is closed.

As for when a media set will close, this is controlled by your Media Pool settings, but as noted, there are some exceptions to this. The job statistics window (double click on the job) will give information when the media set closes and why. If it's not clear from the statistics window, open a Support Case and share logs from the Tape Job for Support to review. It's a fairly quick check in the job log to understand why a media set closed.

(Hint if you're brave enough to log dive yourself: get to the start of your job run and then search mediapool (all one word like that). Once you see an log line with XML, you're at the media pool/tape selection, and you can read line by line for a plain text explanation why a new media set was created.)
