Backup copy VS. Offload and gateway/direct usage

Post by Henrik.Grevelund »

Hi,

I would like to get some clarification about the expected behaviour when using backup copy from a linux hardend repository towards an object storage repository.

I found this page in the documentation:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

In the Offload row this is mentioned:
Direct attached repository. The source backup repository is used as the gateway server. For hardened repository, the role of the gateway server is assigned to the hardened repository.

For the backup copy row it says:
Direct attached repository. The mount server associated with the backup repository is used as the gateway server. If the mount server is not accessible, Veeam Backup & Replication fails over to the backup server.

Does this really mean that the backup copy has to have a windows server present to copy the backup to object storage, where the offload is able to do this directly only using the linux repository ?
If this is true, is there a plan make this limitation go away ?
Have nice day,
Henrik

Hi Henrik

The same row in the table for "Backup copy job / File backup copy job" also mentions:
For backup copy and file copy jobs to an object storage repository with the direct connection mode, the source backup repository is used as the gateway server.
Configure your object storage with "direct connection" mode and your Hardened Repository will be used as a Gateway Server.

Hi Fabian,

Thank you for clearing that out.

We see another behaviour, so we just have to figure why it fails back to the VBR server, when trying to use the linux repos.

Hi Henrik,

Are you running the latest version of Veeam Backup & Replication?
The Hardened Repository is only used as a Gateway server for copy jobs since v12.2, if I remember correctly.

You can also reach out to our support team and provide them with a log package.
The logs will help us determine why the backup server is being used.

Hi Fabian,

No support case needed.
It would be nice if the GUI could have shown the certificate revocation error for the reason of error.

This is concerning to me because, on more than one occasion, Veeam support has specifically advised me against using "direct connection" mode in general, as they have seen a number of offload issues associated with it that get resolved as soon as it gets switched to "gateway mode" (even if the selected gateway is the repo server itself).

Hi David,

That sound strange, clould elaborate a little more about what type of errors ?
All our customers with offload are using the direct method.

The reason i wrote this topic was because the backup copy didn't use the direct method. This was a limitation in previous versions.
