Restore configuration and encrypted backup

Post by matteu »

Hello,

My customer had an outage with the VBR server and built a new one and restore configuration.
All backup jobs were encrypted and he forget to decrypt them on the new server.
So, there is a new backup chain done for all the job and there is also the "undecrypted backup files" on Home -> Backups -> Disk (Encrypted) section.

Can I decrypt them and they will be attach correctly to the backup chain corresponding to the job or I will have issue because new backup chain was made between ?

I'm asking because I have space issue now...

Thanks

Hi matteu,

You can certainly decrypt the backups, but they will not be automatically associated with the jobs if new chains have already been started.

I can see two paths forward:

1. Detach the new backups from the jobs and then map to the old backups. Please note that while this will continue the previous chain, the next incremental backups may be significantly larger. Background retention will handle the "new" backups
2. Continue with the new backup chains and clear the old backups periodically. Background retention doesn't apply to imported backups, but you could workaround this by creating a dummy job, mapping the old backups, then deleting the dummy job to move the backups to Orphaned so background retention can apply

Regrettably, there will not be a way to "merge" the backup chains
