Storage Level Snapshot Backups

Post by Frank_190 »

I am currently in the process of migrating from VMware to Hyper-V. Previously, I utilized storage snapshots from PureStorage to interact seamlessly with Veeam. However, after setting up our Hyper-V environment, I noticed that the storage snapshots (still using PureStorage) are not appearing in Veeam when using the PureStorage plug-in. This raises a concern about whether there is parity between VMware and Hyper-V in terms of backup from storage snapshots. I have already opened a support case, (Case # 07791909 ) but the information provided was conflicting, and I need to expedite this project. Any insights or solutions to ensure smooth integration and functionality would be greatly appreciated. Can I backup Hyper-V VM's from storage snapshots? Link's would be nice.

Hi Frank

VM Backup from Storage Snapshots is not available for HyperV.

Integration Types
IMPORTANT
You cannot back up Hyper-V-based VMs with the help of the integration.
If you use SMB3 storage for HyperV, then we use remote snapshot capabilities of SMB3 (because snapshot has to be created on the volume with the VM files).
But Pure Storage does not provide SMB3 as far as I know.

Hi Frank, you can get somewhat similar funcinality for Hyper-V with the help of off-host backup with hardware-VSS providers, but there's no parity in terms of features (no snapshot orchestration and other advanced stuff, like for VMware).
