Entra ID Backup Feature

Post by James19876 »

Hi.

Made an account here to post some feedback about this new feature.

Honestly, it's really cool. but I think it's been let down by licensing. Why on earth is it 1 slot per 10 users? Seems a bit arbirtrary. We have many service users, so I've lost 5 entire VM workloads to a Entra ID backup? We had to disable it almost immediately due to the large license usage.

It's also dissapoiting that large amounts of the feature is seemingly locked behind other license levels. Can't back up conditional access policies on Foundation. I can understand Audit logs kind of, but configuration doesn't seem right.

Sadly, Veeam seems to be moving more and more to more aggressive licensing. A shame really, since it's an awesome product but these kind of things really put me off persuing renewal.

I'm sure R&D isn't directly involved in what features are licensed at what level but regardless, I felt compelled to feed back that this seems agressive and slightly unfair.
I'm sure you all worked hard on a feature we almost immediately had to turn off :(

Thanks
J

I don't completely agree with you regarding our move towards more aggressive licensing. For example, in the latest version of our product 12.3.1, we actually listened to our customers who were unhappy with the Entra ID licensing and revised the licensing model. Starting from 12.3.1, the product no longer consumes licenses for external (guest) users and disabled users, which significantly reduces the number of consumed instances.

As for the backup of audit logs and conditional access policies, advanced features require higher bundles, which I think is also logical. At the same time, the minimum suitable bundle is Essentials.

Anyway, thank you for the feedback; appreciate it.

Is there a different license count needed depending on the Veeam license you have, eg Foundation, Enterprise, Data Platform Advanced Universal Lic?

If I need 10 for each user my backup costs just for Entra ID would exceed $55k for 235 users.

No differences. However you need 1 license for 10 users, not 10 licenses for 1 user as you said.

Sorry I just typed that wrong, yes 1 lic for 10 users, based on my last VBR renewal that would still be $55k+.
235 users / 10 = 24 Data Platform Advanced Universal lic needed.

That seems ridiculous and not sure how any one can justify that cost, considering I am backing up 25 servers and multiple TBs of data for $14.5k.
so either we are being over charged for our Universal license or Veeam has found an way to boost profits 4x.

I have reached out to our sales person but 3 days later nothing.
