Backup from VBR to remote Synology NAS

Post by rui.rodrigues »

Hi all,

i was wondering if anyone have tried to implement this solution with WAN accelerator on the Synology NAS, installing Veeam plugin for that remotely, on the NAS?

Thank you.

Hi Rui,

WAN Accelerator is only for Backup Copy Jobs and Replicas, not for Backup Jobs.

Also, don’t install any Veeam components directly on Synology’s OS; this isn’t supported by Synology or Veeam.
Instead, set up a repository or gateway server (Windows or Linux) at your remote location. Connect this server to the Synology using iSCSI, and then add it as a repository in your backup environment.

Thank you Fabian.
I know what you're talking about, was looking for a shortcut, because, this will be a solution to have a copy of the backups on a offsite location, in another site of the client.
If i could not have another server only for proxy/wan accelerator, will be optimal.

If not possible will have to put another server on the remote site.

If you’re running a copy job, it’s possible to use a single machine at the offsite location for both the WAN Accelerator and repository roles. Just ensure that the system meets the requirements for both functionalities.

Have you explored other options for your customer, such as immutable object storage or a hardened repository?
NAS systems - especially those designed for home users - are never recommended as a reliable backup target. One key limitation is their lack of support for immutable backups out of the box.
