Best practice guide for local Backup

Post by bmarmont »

We have a vSphere 5 cluster connected to an EVA4400 SAN, vCenter is a physical server.

We are considering attaching a NAS box as a repository for Veeam.

Couple of queries... If our SAN was to die, how can we go about bringing our environment from this storage? Should Veeam be a physical box so if the SAN was to die we can still access it? Whats the best practice method?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Brendan,

You should be using Instant VM Recovery to bring your production VMs back. As to the Veeam B&R server then it can be either physical or virtual. Please keep in mind that if you decide to go with virtual, your backup server will also be lost (assuming that it will be hosted on that very SAN), so to recover your VMs you would need to install a new backup server and import backup files for further restore operations.

Thanks!

Or, since the new 6.1 version of Veeam allows this, you can have an hybrid way: Veeam Backup server on a physical server, remove from it the proxy role, and add a virtual proxy (or multiple proxies if needed). Veeam Backup server will be responsible for powerNFS and all restore operations, and it will be able to to them even when loosing all the SAN and the virtual proxies.
