restore - logical sector size issue

Post by lkwjochen »

In advance: How can I open a ticket for the community edition when I need to update my private profile with a business e-mail address but posting here without a case number is not allowed?

Anyways, these days I wanted to restore my Windows 11 OS backup (only) to a larger NVMe SSD. For safety I created a regular backup to my SMB share and additionally a local full backup to a USB SSD. Veeam Agent for Windows was up to date and so was the recovery medium.

When I started to restore from my local backup Veeam failed with auto mapping. So I tried manually mapping but I got the warning that the logical sector size differs between backed up disk and the destination disk. Ok, so I tried the regular backup from my SMB share - same result. Then I mounted the former NVMe SDD again (which was in use before!) but again the same results with the local backup and the SMB share backup.

I ended up to reinstall Windows 11 from scratch. Later I checked the logical and physical sector size (maybe a BIOS update suddenly supported native 4K...who knows). But I still have 512 logical and 4k physical sector size as mostly common.

So how can I avoid such a problem in the future. Above all i use some agent instances at my company for servers and I hope I never get into such a situation again.
