Separate backup repository for Shared Mailbox folders – does Veeam auto-detect permission changes?

Post by lylybrown »

Hi everyone,

I’m setting up Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 for our Office 365 environment. We have several shared mailboxes, and their permission groups change quite often (people being added or removed).

Here’s what I’m trying to achieve:

The main folder in a shared mailbox should be backed up to a dedicated repository (e.g., object storage) for long-term retention.

When a new user or group is granted access to that shared mailbox, their sent/received emails should still be included in the same backup scope.

When someone’s permissions are removed, their previous messages should remain in the backup.

My question is:
Do I need to reconfigure anything in Veeam every time a user/group is added or removed from the shared mailbox?
Or will Veeam automatically detect these permission changes and continue backing up the mailbox according to the existing job setup?

Specifically, I’ve created a backup job targeting the “Entire mailbox” and storing it in Object Storage according to our policy. If I later assign a new group access to that mailbox, will the backup job automatically handle this, or do I need to adjust the backup filters or policy manually?

Thanks! I’d love to hear from anyone who’s dealt with shared mailboxes and frequent permission changes in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.

Hi lyly,

Veeam backs up the mailbox itself and emails within this mailbox. For backup, it does not matter who has access to it - VB365 only protects the data, but not the access permissions or changes in those permissions.

Thanks!
