Remove Deleted Items feature

I have an agent job backing up a volume on a physical server. A copy job then copies these backups to S3.

Is the "Remove Deleted Items data after" feature of the copy job meant to be effective in this case? I'm investingating an ever-growing bucket. The documentation for this feature is vm oriented so maybe it just doesn't apply when physical volumes and/or object storage are being used?

I was hoping the feature would remove files that have been deleted on the source volume from the S3 bucket.

Have you checked out the Deleted Items Retention documentation to verify that the conditions have been met to allow the removal of the deleted data?

Just to confirm, you're discussion item 3 from this page, correct?

This specifically refers to deleted item retention, and is meant to clean up backups of workloads that were part of the backup, but no longer exist in the environment. The relevant line from the User Guide is here:

By default, when you remove a machine protected by Veeam Backup & Replication from the virtual infrastructure, exclude a machine from the backup copy job or stop protecting a machine with Veeam Agent, the copied data still remains in backup files in the target backup repository. To avoid keeping redundant data on disk, you can enable the Remove deleted items data after option in the backup copy job settings. With this option enabled, at the end of every synchronization cycle Veeam Backup & Replication will remove data for deleted machines from backup files in the target backup repository

I would advise open a Support Case and let Veeam Support review the situation if you have reason to believe the bucket usage growth is unexpected. The option you found will help clear out data from the bucket no longer being updated, but it sounds like you're seeing growth beyond just that, so a Support case is the way to go.

On which version are you? We had constantly growing buckets too and this was because of a bug that was fixed in a version a few months ago. Suddenly 500TB were cleaned up within 24h.

I upgraded to 12.3.2.4165 very recently, but the problem remains. Thanks for posting, though.
