DR Testing

Post by vrmsot@nlicgulf.com »

Dear all,

Today our Application Owner want to test few VMs replicating to DR site.

As i understand from Failover plans , I red about failover in Veeam Online that :
  • Failover Now = Turns on the latest replica. workload from source VM is not migrated so we actually have some data loss depends on when the last replication was done.
  • Planned Failover = Moves all workload in from source vm to replica. Powers off source vm and the replica is now acting same as the source VM.

we can not shutdown the Production VMs while testing the DR site.

first option Failover now. will makes up the Replication VMs in Dr & will not power off the Source VMs..

is this will be a right option to test for DR testing... please advise

Thanks

Hi Pankaj,

Depending on what you're wanting to accomplish, there are a few ways of validating replicas:

SureReplica allows you to test and ensure the replicas are usable / bootable in an isolated environment -- this is an automated test that ensures the replicas boot and pass any tests you define in the SureReplica job, and then the replicas are powered off without saving data, similar to if you manually initiated a failover and then did "Undo Failover", just with SureReplica the replicas are isolated so as to not interfere from production.

Planned Failover is designed to switch the workload from production to DR and will perform a final incremental pass before performing replica failover. After performing planned failover, you will need to finalize the failover in some way (permanent failover, failback, undo failover).

Based on your post, sounds like you need to only test the replicas and not run any actual workload on them, so consider SureReplica.
