Debian Linux 13 support

Post by Roger63 » 1 person likes this post

Debian Linux 13 (Trixie) was released on August 9th, so I gave VAL a try in a VM (amd64). Since Debian 13 is not yet supported, failure came to no surprise (the snapshot kernel module was not built and a recovery image could not be downloaded).

Is there an ETA for Debian 13 support?

No ETA yet but our standard target for all new OS/platform/app versions support is 90 days since GA.

I installed Debian 13 a few days ago and after the initial installation of VAL it failed too. I had to install linux-headers-amd64 and then re-installed VAL and since then it is running fine.

Ignore my previous remark...got a new kernel and now VAL also keeps failing. Think we have to wait for Veeam till they officially announce support for Debian 13.

It is supported with Veeam Agent for Linux v13 (What’s New in v13 - page 17).

That is apparently a version that comes with the Backup & Replication v13 suite. The latest standalone VAL available as a Free/Community download is still 6.3.2 which does not support Debian 13.

We need to plan when we can upgrade a dozen or so of our boxes to Debian 13, Veeam support for Debian 13 is holding us back.
It's now ~90 days since Trixie Release

Is it possible to be more precise than Q4 2025.

Hi Alec,

V13.0.1 RTM for our Service Providers is now available.
End customers who urgently need features from v13.0.1 can contact our support team to request access to the RTM build. It’s fully supported for production and can be upgraded to GA later (in case GA build is different).

However, we recommend waiting 2–4 weeks, when the public release (GA) will be available for all customers without needing a support case.

Best,

The standalone VAL 13.0.1 was released yesterday, but installation on Debian 13 is still a no go. I get this on a fresh copy of Debian 13.2:

Also the user guide downloaded from the mail with the download links is for 6.3.2.1207 (even though the date was changed to November 2025) en does not even mention Debian 13. I guess we'll have to wait a little longer.

Please note that this thread is about Debian 13, while you are testing Debian 13.2 which was released just a few days ago, so a couple of weeks after VAL 13.0.1 was shipped.

I installed Debian 13.0 in a VM: same error. As far as I can tell the repository is broken (possibly a missing signed Release file).

Yes, the error clearly indicates some issue with the repository. I just wanted to highlight that Debian 13.2 was shipped after VAL 13.0.1 and therefore might not be supported by the latter. We will know soon enough, QA is testing it right now.

2x good news!

Not only the repository issue has now been resolved, but also our QA has validated Debian 13.2 as compatible with VAL 13.0.1

The documentation will soon be updated to reflect this.

Confirmed! VAL 13.0.1 now installs without problems on my Debian 13.2 test VM. I could also backup the system to an SMB share without any problems.

I see a few issues though. One is major (recovery media creation fails), two are minor (no operational impact). This is probably not the place to discuss technical details. Shall I open a support case? I am using the free version.

Hi @r@Roger63

Yes, as this seems to be a technical issue, please submit a support case and share the case number here for reference.

In the meantime, you can download the recovery media from https://www.veeam.com/products/free/linux.html under the Additional Downloads section.
