Feature request: Preview Tags combination

Post by Didi7 »

Hello Veeam,

I am looking for a preview feature for a Tags combination (VMware of course). I would like to preview the VMs, that will be selected for a specific backup to disk job.

This would be extremely helpful instead of going into vCenter every time and that's not how it should be, as we are talking about a backup selection.

Is this already available and I missed it?

Regards,
Didi7

Hi Didi7.
The list of VMs is built at runtime when the backup job starts. This discovery process involves rescanning the infrastructure, which can take a few minutes to identify all relevant objects - that’s why there isn’t a preview option available right now. That can be partially solved by browsing the Add dialog, where you can see individual objects. However, it doesn’t solve the exact case for tag combinations - you still won’t be able to preview the VMs that will be included when multiple tags are used together. Adding a preview feature is definitely an interesting idea and could be considered for future releases!

Hello Egor,

I somehow remember that Veeam B&R is caching information in order to browse the whole vCenter structure faster. This was always faster as in other backup products.

I understand though that incorporating such a preview feature takes time but maybe you can use caching information here as well. The preview feature is part of another backup product and it is really a nice feature and there it doesn't take ages to see the preview, just a couple of seconds and it is extremely helpful.

Just a thought and thanks for replying.
