Hi Forum, due to recent changes in VBR v13 regarding File-toTape Jobs (no more File-to-Tape Jobs with managed servers as a source) i had some discussion with your support. First, i want to thank your Support Team for a very detailed description how to further use File-toTape Jobs in v13 (adding Backup-Server as Fileserver)! This is how support should work, thumsb up!
Our Backup scenario for Tape Backup is: all veam backups (21 restore points per VM, Forever incremental) go to Disk on our backup server. After all backups are made, ALL Backup Files are backed up via File to Tape Job to Tape, with a Daily Tape Set for every Day (+ Week and + Monthly). Retention 7 Days / 4 Weeks / 12 Months.
So i have the complete Backup-Chain of all my VM’s Daily on 1 Tape Set – this tape set is stored Air Gapped, so i have protection against Cyberattacks AND physical Damage (Fire, flood, electricity etc.). Next Day, new Tapes. Every Day all my Backups safe.
Unfortunately, when discussing about this and taking „Backup-to-Tape“ Jobs in consideration, we came to the conclusion that this scenario cannot be done with Veeam Backup-to-Tape Jobs. See Case # 07916616
So my question, is it possible to integrate a function to future versions, where Backup-to-tape can
- Save ALL Backup Files on ONE Tape-Set, with a new daily Media Set for each Day (e.g. Week / Months)

Re: Feature Request - Veeam Backup-To-Tape Jobs - All Backups to one Tapeset Daily?
Hi Marco31,
First, thank you for the kind words for our Support Team, will be sure that they get passed along to the Engineer (if you're willing, be sure to fill out the survey that is sent after case closure as well
)
As for the request, just to make sure I get your tape-out scheme correctly:
- Dedicated tape for each day of the week, each tape job run should backup every file on the repository added, regardless of whether a given backup file was backed up on a previous tape job run, 7 days (1 week) retention for each tape. (So Monday's tape should be overwritable on the next Monday and capture the current state of the backups on repository)
- Weekly tape job which also backs up all files but with longer retention (4 weeks) -- each week should capture the full state of the backup files on the repository and preserve that state for 4 weeks
- Monthly tape job which does the same as Weekly, but with longer retention (12 months for each backup set)
Am I correct?
Reading the Support Case, maybe I missed it due to needing to translate, but I don't see the File to Tape Full Backup Schedule mentioned -- this would do exactly what you're asking -- whatever folder / share / server is added, the File to Tape job will perform a full backup regardless of what was previously written. I believe this would meet your requirements with multiple File to Tape jobs without issue especially since Veeam Backup files are free (as in beer) to backup with File to Tape (no instance consumption)
I'm not sure on your tape rotation scheme, but since you mention exporting the tapes to a safe location, going to assume you're meticulous about inserting the correct tape for the day, which is the only matter to pay attention to.
As for the overall request that Backup to Tape jobs have a "tape-out all files in repository", it's been discussed before and will consider your feedback on that request.
