Unable to install VBO365 on a fresh Windows 11 system

Post by Gerald »

I am trying to install Veeam Backup for Office 365 on a fresh Windows 11 Pro system.

I tried both
VeeamBackupMicrosoft365_8.2.0.2202.iso
VeeamBackupMicrosoft365_8.3.0.2201.iso

First problem is installation fails because a newer version of the C++ Runtime libraries is installed on the system. I removed the newer versions and installed the old ones from the iso, then the installation proceeds. But after quite a while of doing install stuff it aborts.

I think this is the relevant info from the install log

Code: Select all

Why does the function NET.EXE" START "Veeam.Archiver.Service" fail? Error message from Windows is in German.
"Der Dienst reagiert auf die Kontrollfunktion nicht" => "The service does not respond to the control function"

It's a fresh W11 install inside Proxmox. Nothing really installed on the system except the virtio guest drivers and agent.

take a look at the release notes in kb 4809.

It's 25H2 of course. Win11 23H2 is end of support since November 2025, almost two months ago.

Only the home and pro versions, Enterprise keeps updating until November 2026.
Ah, I see you're on pro. So yes, correct. Still, I'd wager not many people are installing Veeam on normal Windows 11 systems, but rather Server.

I did some further tests since the answer "25H2 is not in the compatibility list" smelled like corporate BS, and of course unsurprisingly this was the case this time as well. Of course VBO365 works on Windows 11 Pro 25H2.

The first problem is the installer is slightly unreliable and screws up the installation when the latest version of the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtimes is installed with the following error:
Image

But the main problem is that the installer is actually an incredibly unreliable P.O.S. that screws up the installation even if that newer version of the Visual C++ runtimes was only once installed on the system and then uninstalled again! I thought at first the aborted install had screwed something up, but: brand new w11 pro 25h2 install ==> install latest visual c++ redistributable x86+x64, immidately uninstall both again, reboot 3) install VBO365 and the installer fails:

So basically if for whatever reason you had a recent Visual C++ Redistributable on the system you are screwed and need to do a full reinstall of the OS in order for the vibecoded installer to work again.
