Azure blob deduplication efficiency and restore speed

Post by TRE3 »

Hello everyone,

One of our customers backs up all their local vSphere VMs to an on-prem backup server and then offloads the backups to a single Azure storage account (Cold Blob). Since this involves several terabytes, they are wondering how quickly they could restore their environment from Azure Blob to Azure VMs, given that the restore speed is only around 100 MB/s.

They would like to know whether it makes sense to split their Azure cloud backups across multiple storage accounts and whether this would significantly improve the restore speed in case of recovery. They are also interested in how this setup would affect deduplication — are only backups of a single VM deduplicated in Azure Blob storage, or those of a backup job, or of the entire Azure storage account?

What does Veeam say about this, and what are your experiences and recommendations?

Hello, if they worry about RTO when restoring from backup copy in Azure, did they consider restoring directly to Azure instead? Even if temporarily. Because no matter how you slice or dice it, every other approach else will still take hours/days comparing to under 5 minutes to boot screen with Veeam instant recovery to Azure (V13 feature).

Wow! That's a great feature!

The backup size is around 100TB. So you would recommend to use just one Azure storage account and then use Instant Recovery to Azure. That makes things way easier :D

Thanks a lot!
