We are planning to back up Hyper-V guest VMs to Veeam Vault using the Veeam v13 Software Appliance (VSA).
To prepare for a failure of the VSA itself, we also plan to store the configuration backup in Veeam Vault.
My question is:
Is it possible to restore a configuration backup that is stored in Veeam Vault back to a VSA?
As far as I understand, to restore a configuration backup to a VSA, we need to connect to the Host Management Console (port 10443) from a Windows PC using a web browser, and then upload a configuration backup file that is available on the local disk of the Windows PC.
In other words, the configuration backup stored in Veeam Vault would first need to be downloaded from Veeam Vault to the local Windows PC.
However, I have a concern: based on the Veeam Vault documentation, I do not see any description indicating that files stored in Veeam Vault can be downloaded to a PC.

Re: VSA Config Backup Restore from Veeam Vault
Hi Tetsuo,
The backups are present; however, as you mentioned, there is currently no way to access the configuration backup files on VDC Vault.
At this moment, I don’t have a solution. I recommend using a different configuration backup target until I can provide you with more information.
Best regards,
Fabian

Re: VSA Config Backup Restore from Veeam Vault
Thank you very much, Fabian.
My understanding is as follows:
1. When a configuration backup is created from a VSA to Wasabi Object Storage, the .bco file can be downloaded from the Wasabi console, so there is no issue.
2. When a configuration backup is created from a traditional Windows-based VBR server to Veeam Vault, the restore wizard allows browsing the Vault and selecting the configuration backup, so this also works as expected.
Only in the case of configuration backups from a VSA to Veeam Vault, restoring the configuration is currently not possible.
In a future version, it would be great if the VSA could browse Veeam Vault in the same way as Windows-based VBR, and if configuration backups stored in Vault could be restored directly to a VSA.
This capability would be highly appreciated.
Thank you again for your detailed and helpful response.
Best regards,
Tetsuo

Re: VSA Config Backup Restore from Veeam Vault
Hi Tetsuo,
Yes, that’s correct.
I’ve already started discussing some ideas with our VDC Vault team and will continue the conversation with the VDP product teams. We have a few potential approaches in mind, but there’s no confirmation or ETA yet.
As a workaround: Our VDC Vault engineer mentioned that, as of today, you should reach out to our support team. They’ll be able to provide access to the shared keys for the VDC Vault storage account, which you can then use with third-party tools to retrieve the BCO files.
Best regards,
Fabian
