Copying Immutable Object Storage Backups to another Repository
Hello all,
I am trying to understand the functionality of the "Copy backups to..." function in B&R in combination with immutable object storage backups.
I have an object storage repository on my backupserver with immutable Veeam backups in it.
Now I am trying to copy these backups to another location.
First I want to copy these backups to a "normal" disk repository and after that I want to copy the backups from disk to a new S3 bucket.
My question is what happens with the immutability settings of the backups?
Do these settings get "lost" in the copy process?
Because the "normal" disk repository does not have the immutability feature, therefore it should not be possible, right?
Greetings

Re: Copying Immutable Object Storage Backups to another Repository
Hi Niclas, welcome to the forums.
Please see our User Guide page on Copy Backup -- the backups will inherit the immutability settings of the target repository.
However, question -- do you simply want to have a spare copy of the backups or continue the backup chains on a new repository? The Backup Move feature will likely be more convenient for you if the plan is to switch repositories and continue the backup chain.

Re: Copying Immutable Object Storage Backups to another Repository
Hi David,
thanks for your answer.
In my case I want to change the s3 vendor.
I already startet a new backup chain in a new S3 bucket from the new vendor.
Now I want to copy the old backups in another s3 bucket of the new vendor in case I need to restore data.
Therefore the old S3 bucket would become obsolete.
So if I enable immutability in the new S3 bucket/repository i could copy the backups directly from the old S3 repository into the new one and the immutability of the new repository would be applied?
For example if I would configure 30 days as my immutability setting in the new bucket/repository, would that mean, that after the backups got copied, they would all be immutable for 30 days from now?
I am reffering to this part of the User Guidepage on Copy Backup:
If you copy a backup chain to a repository with different immutability or retention settings, Veeam Backup & Replication will replace the source repository settings with the settings of the target repository for that specific backup chain.

Re: Copying Immutable Object Storage Backups to another Repository
Got it, then Copy Backup indeed is what you're looking for.

Correct, basically the copies of the backup will not inherit the old immutability settings and will go through the same retention / immutability logic, but with the new repository's configuration.
